The Associated Black Charities celebrates Maryland’s African American Medical Legends with an exhibition that pays tribute to historical legacies of these remarkable individuals. The exhibition provides an exploration into the portrayal of the real stories of these men and women who persevered in medicine despite cultural, racial and socio-economic challenges. These are narratives and experiences yet to be revealed. This exhibition tells those stories through archival photographs connected to the reality and gravity of their contributions to the historical legacy of medical professionals in the State of Maryland.  Exhibit curatorship provided by Special Gathering, LLC.

Associated Black Charities (ABC), the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers (ABAG) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) wanted to increase the awareness of the facts related to childhood obesity by launching its Blueprint report.  ABC, ABAG and RWJF partnered with many local and statewide organizations to get the message out to the public of the risks related to childhood obesity, but even more importantly, to give the East Baltimore community, information and practical solutions for reducing childhood obesity in their neighborhoods.

In the continuing effort to stop the violence and help keep youth alive and free, the Street Soldiers National Consortium along with the Safe Healing Foundation held the Alive & Free National Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. The goal was to teach conference participants the Alive and Free Prescription so that it can be implemented in schools and programs in Baltimore and in neighboring communities. The conference took place at the Historic Lake Clifton Campus, the home of Doris M. Johnson and Heritage High Schools, where the Alive & Free Prescription is currently being successfully implemented.

Grantmakers in Film + Electronic Media and the Council on Foundations held a reception and screening of Traces of the Trade: A Story of the Deep North.  Producer/Director Katrina Browne tells the story of her forefathers, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. Given the myth that the South is solely responsible for slavery, viewers will be surprised to learn that Browne’s ancestors were Northerners. The film follows Browne and nine fellow family members on a remarkable journey which brings them face-to-face with the history and legacy of New England’s hidden enterprise.  Following the screening, Harvard Law Professor, Charles Ogletree, and esteemed NewsHour journalist, Judy Woodruff, led a Socratic dialogue with a panel comprised of some of the greatest thinkers of our time.  The screening took place at the newly opened Newseum in Washington, DC.

The 2009 Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group of North America (DPSG-NA) meeting spotlighted “Therapeutic and Diagnostic Controversies”. Several nationally – and internationally-recognized experts underscored the state-of-the-art information relevant to each session.  The meeting focused on recent findings of the HAPO multi-center trial; as well as, those of the NIH consensus in addressing methods of diagnosing and managing diabetes in pregnancy- particularly gestational diabetes. The influence of genetics including potential markers was also covered.

Safe Healing Foundation, Inc.’s “Going Green to Change the Scene” in partnership with Civic Works “Real Food Farm” officially open Baltimore’s First Ever HoopVillage at Historic Lake Clifton Campus.  Baltimore’s HoopVillage consists of three hoophouses (high tunnel greenhouses), which will help to enrich youth academics, give students access to organic food, offer entrepreneurial opportunities/youth development apprenticeships and encourage healthy community living.
